What you need to know: Eligible Californians can apply to save thousands of dollars on home energy costs through rebates now available to homeowners as part of a federal rebate program. This is the first of two federal programs rolling out in California to make efficient, comfortable, and climate-resilient homes more affordable, and to cut pollution.

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC) Residential Clean Energy Credit (30%)

What it covers: Solar panels, solar water heaters, geothermal, wind turbines, battery storage (if over 3 kWh). Credit amount: 30% of total system cost. Duration: Available through 2032. Notes: No income limit; available for primary and secondary homes.

How it works

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit

What it covers: Insulation, windows, doors, heat pumps, electrical panel upgrades. Credit amount: Up to $1,200/year for general upgrades. Up to $2,000 for heat pump installation. Annual limits apply by category (e.g., $600 for windows).

Who Qualifies

California State Programs: Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)

What it covers: Battery storage systems (often paired with solar). Rebates: $150/kWh (base) $850–$1,000+/kWh for low-income, fire zone, or medically vulnerable residents. Bonus: Stackable with federal credits.
